The problem
Business Performance erodes when it is left to instinct instead of method.
You were taught the moves piecemeal, never the whole model.

The model
- 01HR Professional Competencies
- 02Effective HR Department
- 03Organizational Capability
- 04HR Personal Effectiveness
- 05Business Performance

Step 1 of 5 · HR Professional Competencies
Personal credibility gets you in the room; strategic positioning determines whether you should have been invited.
Misconception
That the six domains are of equal weight, so HR professionals should try to develop all of them evenly.
Reality
The domains do the work differently: Credible Activist earns you the personal standing to be heard, but Strategic Positioner is what actually drives business results — you need the trust to be invited in and the strategic acuity to be worth inviting.

Step 2 of 5 · Effective HR Department
The department is a separate lever from the individual — invest in both, because one cannot substitute for the other.
Misconception
That improving HR effectiveness is primarily about upgrading the skills of the people in the function.
Reality
Individual competence and departmental effectiveness are distinct, additive levers — the department has a value-creation logic (external linkage, strategic alignment, integrated solutions, analytics) that operates independently of any single person's ability.
HR From the Outside In · Mike West, Editor · HR Leader Guide
Step 3 of 5 · Organizational Capability
Capability is HR's deliverable to the business — it is where individual and departmental effort become collective advantage.
Misconception
That organizational capability is the same as individual competence — just talented people aggregated.
Reality
Capability lives in patterns of collective activity and reputation, not in any individual's skill set; a firm can be full of capable people yet be slow, siloed, and disconnected from customers.

Step 4 of 5 · HR Personal Effectiveness
Your effectiveness is scored by others and relative to your peers, not measured against an absolute standard.
Misconception
That being demonstrably competent automatically produces a reputation for effectiveness.
Reality
Effectiveness here is a comparative judgment made by others — you are rated against other HR professionals and through the lens of stakeholder perception, so competence that goes unseen or unarticulated does not count.

Step 5 of 5 · Business Performance
Business performance is served best when HR targets the capabilities that produce it, not the results themselves.
Misconception
That HR competencies and department effectiveness drive business performance mainly directly, so HR can take direct credit for financial results.
Reality
HR's influence on performance runs substantially through organizational capability — HR builds the capabilities that produce results, and honest attribution respects that intervening link rather than overclaiming a straight line to profit.
