The problem
World-Class Skill erodes when it is left to instinct instead of method.
You were taught the moves piecemeal, never the whole model.

The model
- 01Deep Practice
- 02Ignition (Motivational Fuel)
- 03Primal Cues
- 04Master Coaching
- 05Myelination
- 06Skill Circuit Firing
- 07World-Class Skill
The Talent Code: Greatness Isn't Born. It's Grown. Here's How. · Mike West, Editor · HR Leader Guide
Step 1 of 5 · Deep Practice
Skill grows fastest at the ragged edge where you fail often but recoverably — aim for a success rate that leaves room for constant correction.
Misconception
Practitioners believe more repetitions automatically mean more improvement, so they drill what they can already do smoothly.
Reality
Fluent, error-free repetition mostly reinforces what already exists; growth comes specifically from the friction of reaching for something you can't quite do yet and catching your mistakes as they happen. The struggle is not a byproduct — it is the mechanism.

Step 2 of 5 · Ignition (Motivational Fuel)
Ignition is engineered by primal cues of identity and belonging, not selected for as an innate trait.
Misconception
Practitioners believe motivation is a stable personality trait—some kids are 'driven' and others aren't—so they screen for hunger rather than trying to create it.
Reality
Ignition is triggered, not inherited: a specific signal ('someone like me did this') detonates a disproportionate, long-burning commitment in an ordinary person. The energy comes from identity and belonging, not from a rational cost-benefit calculation about future rewards.

Step 3 of 5 · Primal Cues
A single well-placed signal of future belonging can trigger years of committed practice.
Misconception
Practitioners believe motivation is a stable internal trait—some learners simply 'have drive' and others don't.
Reality
Ignition is triggered by tiny, often unconscious signals from the environment—a phrase, a photo, a sense of scarcity or belonging—and those signals can be engineered on purpose rather than waited for.

Step 4 of 5 · Master Coaching
Great coaching is diagnostic precision, not motivational volume.
Misconception
Coaches assume the best teachers give inspiring speeches and comprehensive lectures that transfer their expertise.
Reality
Master coaches say little and time it exactly—short, targeted 'do this now' corrections calibrated to what the learner can absorb in this rep, drawn from a vast internal library they rarely display.

Step 5 of 5 · Myelination
Skill is physically stored as myelin insulation, so it is built, not bestowed.
Misconception
Practitioners assume talent is either genetic wiring you're born with or a mysterious mental quality that can't be physically located.
Reality
Skill has a tangible physical form—layers of myelin insulation—and myelin grows in direct response to how much and how precisely you fire a given circuit, meaning ability is built substance, not inherited essence.
