One book, placed in its field — what this book gets right, where it goes further than the rest, and what the rest of the field adds.

The problem
Change Adoption and Implementation erodes when it is left to instinct instead of method.
You were taught the moves piecemeal, never the whole model.

The model
- 01Executive Sponsorship
- 02Sense of Urgency and Compelling Case
- 03Shared Vision and Strategic Direction
- 04Effective Change Communication
- 05Stakeholder Participation and Co-Creation
- 06Reinforcement and Anchoring
- 07Transformational Leadership
- 08Transformation Saturation

Step 1 of 5 · Executive Sponsorship
Legitimacy on Wikipedia is bottom-up: a sponsor's contribution record matters more than their title.
Misconception
That the Wikimedia Foundation's C-suite or Board can sponsor a change and volunteers will follow because leadership blessed it.
Reality
On Wikipedia, credible sponsorship comes from respected editors, admins, and arbitration/functionary members whose standing is earned through edit history — Foundation authority often triggers resistance rather than adoption (see the 2014 Media Viewer and superprotect revolt).

Step 2 of 5 · Sense of Urgency and Compelling Case
Urgency for volunteers must be mission-grounded and data-backed, not deadline-driven.
Misconception
That editor decline statistics or Foundation strategic goals will create the same urgency they would in a corporation.
Reality
Volunteers respond to concrete, verifiable threats to the encyclopedia's quality and mission — vandalism backlogs, coverage gaps, harassment driving away contributors — not to abstract growth metrics or fundraising narratives.

Step 3 of 5 · Shared Vision and Strategic Direction
A durable vision is aggregated from editors' motivations, not handed down to them.
Misconception
That a polished strategic vision (like a Movement Strategy document) can be published and then rallied around.
Reality
Wikipedia's vision aggregates thousands of individual editors' motivations — accuracy, openness, neutrality — so a shared vision works only when it is assembled from and reflects those existing values, not overlaid on them.

Step 4 of 5 · Effective Change Communication
Communication on Wikipedia is a threaded conversation you must sustain, not a broadcast you complete.
Misconception
That a site banner, a blog post, or a mass message satisfies the obligation to communicate.
Reality
Wikipedia culture treats one-way announcements as disrespectful; genuine communication means responding to objections in threaded discussion where every editor can reply and expects to be answered.

Step 5 of 5 · Stakeholder Participation and Co-Creation
Involve editors in problem-framing, not just solution-reviewing.
Misconception
That gathering feedback on a near-final design counts as participation and co-creation.
Reality
On Wikipedia, co-creation means editors help frame the problem and build the solution — often through community wishlist processes, pilot opt-ins, and consensus-editing of proposals — so 'participation' bolted onto a finished plan reliably backfires (Media Viewer, Flow, VisualEditor rollouts).
