The problem
Firm Performance erodes when it is left to instinct instead of method.
You were taught the moves piecemeal, never the whole model.

The model
- 01Environmental Context
- 02Strategic Approach Choice
- 03Strategy-Environment Fit
- 04Firm Performance

Step 1 of 4 · Environmental Context
Predictability and malleability are independent axes—an environment can be unpredictable yet highly shapeable, or predictable yet rigid.
Misconception
Practitioners treat the environment as a single condition that applies uniformly to the whole company.
Reality
Different business units, product lines, and even functions inside one firm often face radically different environments simultaneously; a mature core business may be predictable while an adjacent venture is genuinely shapeable.

Step 2 of 4 · Strategic Approach Choice
Each archetype demands a distinct planning cadence, risk posture, and organizational design—you cannot adopt the label without the machinery.
Misconception
Leaders believe they can pick one archetype and run the entire enterprise on it as a coherent corporate philosophy.
Reality
Most large firms need to run multiple archetypes at once (ambidexterity) and switch between them as environments change; the skill is orchestration, not allegiance to a single style.

Step 3 of 4 · Strategy-Environment Fit
Fit, not the intrinsic quality of a strategy, is the proximate cause of performance in the Reeves framework.
Misconception
Executives assume a strategy that succeeded before will keep fitting because it is fundamentally sound.
Reality
Fit degrades over time as environments drift; the most dangerous failures come from firms that keep winning approaches long past the point where the underlying conditions still support them.

Step 4 of 4 · Firm Performance
Performance is a downstream consequence of strategy-environment fit, not an independent goal to be managed directly.
Misconception
Practitioners equate current financial results with strategic success and conclude their approach is working.
Reality
Performance is the lagging output of fit, so today's numbers reflect the fit of years past; a strong quarter can coexist with a strategy that has already fallen out of alignment with its environment.
